1 - Sant'Isidoro
.
The symbolic meaning of the mystery is the dedication of the agricultural work, the 'hypothetical purchaser, the Corporation of the peasants.
A Sant 'Isidoro, patron saint of farmers, was an altar dedicated to the Church of San Leonardo.
depicts the Holy Mystery, a farmer at the English knight John de Vergas, hitting the ground with a stick by spring water to quench the thirst of his master. Dominates the Mystery a big candle that is supported by three angels, the Face of the settlers.
The Face was formed by a piece of wood coated with wax in a piece of wood on top of that, the symbol of light and therefore of life, seems emblematic of the true diffuse light on the ground with the spread of Christianity. It seems that there were two Faci down in Campobasso 'entrance of the premises of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament that campobassani looked almost with high devotion to superstition.
torches in the procession preceding the mysteries of the Blessed Sacrament and devotion were built for farmers and artisans.
Face The farmer s' rose from a tree trunk with moss and surrounded by ears, and during the procession, was accompanied by pipers and pipers, while that of artisans rested on a pedestal on which two golden angels wood seemed to support her, and during the procession, was accompanied by violin players.
Over the years, the Face of the artisans fell into disuse, perhaps wanting to build as many as were the arts, and remained for a long time that farmers, who opposed when he tried to delete it because it was considered crude and obsolete usages .
citizens burned it at night but two more times farmers rebuilt until it renounced the promise behind that of Zinn would have made a mystery to Face with the addition of a miracle of Sant 'Isidoro, protector of farmers.

.
The symbolic meaning of the mystery is the dedication to craftsmanship, the hypothetical buyer was the guild of artisans.
The subject represented is San Crispino, which abandoned the noble Roman, preached the Gospel in Gaul, and learned to sew shoes for a living.
While working together with two aides, appeared to him three angels holding the symbols of the future martyrdom that took place under the 'Emperor Maximilian (the sign of the decapitation sword, palm, symbol of martyrdom, the crown, for the merits of the Saint).
San Crispino, patron saint of shoemakers, was dedicated to an altar of the Church of San Leonardo.
The Mystery of San Crispino replaced the Face of the artisans.

3 - San Gennaro
.

The symbolic significance of the Mystery is to be strong in the face of adversity.
Mystery depicts San Gennaro surrounded by three angels, one of which carries the bulbs, in memory of all those 'now preserve the blood of the saint, and another table with the words "Est in nobis sanguine life" (For us Life is in the blood).
The saint is the patron saint of Naples, represented by Vesuvius on the basis of the Mystery and Sebeto symbolized by the river, as in the ancient paintings, from an old lying in his hand a spade.
The character that represents the river Sebeto on the Mystery of San Gennaro is known in folklore as the Beggar because his appearance (long hair, unshaven, half-naked) resembles that of a bum.

.
The symbolic meaning of the mystery is the 'due obedience to God and the importance of placing our faith in him. The Mystery shows Abraham obedient to God's will, is about to sacrifice his only son Isaac, an angel of the Lord stops the hand holding the knife and tells him to offer a ram as a burnt offering instead of Isaac.

5 - Mary Magdalene
.
The symbolic meaning of the mystery is that the penance you get the forgiveness of God is the Holy Mystery
suspended in the air near the altar, the scene is completed by four angels: the two are at the foot of the altar the place of the altar boys, the other two at the sides of Santa, offer the alabaster box containing the 'oil which anointed Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a book on a skull to symbolize death.
History tells us that following the death of Jesus Magdalene with the Virgin Mary lived in Jerusalem, then was put by the Jews on a boat with his brothers and Martha and Lazarus left at the mercy of the waves. Landed in Marseille
retired to a secluded place and lived there thirty years by eating wild fruit and sleeping on the bare earth, while Lazarus was bishop of Marseilles. One day the Holy Church, St. Maximin, the bishop of Aix, to communicate and when they entered the church and saw it suspended, after having forwarded it, and saw his soul ascending to heaven. In
Via Ferrari was a church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene. The Latin Church in the liturgy was used to unite the three separate women mentioned in the Gospel and the Greek liturgy commemorates separately: Mary Bethany, sister of Lazarus and Martha, the unnamed sinful woman "whom much was forgiven because she loved much" (Luke 7, 36-50), and Mary Magdalene or Magdalen, the 'obsessive miraculously healed by Jesus, that she followed and watched with the other women up to the crucifixion and had the privilege to see resurrected. The combination of Mary Magdalene and the redeemed prostitute actually dates back to 591, when Pope Gregory the Great, based on some Eastern traditions, in his sermon identified the two figures. However, this identification is not reflected in the Gospels, so that in 1969 the Vatican officially recognized the error of Gregory the Great. The identification of Mary Magdalene with Mary of Bethany and the sinner was explicitly rejected by the Catholic Church only during the Second Vatican Council and is also rejected by Protestants.

The symbolic meaning is surely 'be strong in the face of temptations. The Mystery
represents the temptations suffered by Sant 'Antonio Abate by devils is present in the normal way (above and below the Saint) is under the guise of charming young lady.
the sides of the Saint are two angels who carry in their hands, respectively, a book on which burns a flame and a stick with a bell. The flame represents the fire that S. Antonio Abate has the power to defend ourselves, the club is the symbol of the hermit's life led by the Holy recalled while the bell, with its ring, the call to prayer.
The devil on the bottom, whistle and repeated the girl: "tunzella tunzella, vietenn vietenn.
's most plausible interpretation for the girl is that she is a charmer, a being chosen for their evil. She tends laces of seduction with the voluptuous movement of the fan and looking resigned, in fact, it goes to ground, but on the mirror where you can see and meet the eyes of the saint.
It seems that in the past was personified Donzella by an effeminate young man (the "femminiello") because it was unseemly for a serious girl appear alone in public.
When Then the girls were allowed to impersonate this role, rumors spread that the girl would become pregnant within one year and others that would remain a spinster.
Later it was thought that instead the presence of the mystery of the girl opened the door to marriage.
In the past it was established a prize for the lady that she could not laugh. Town is also to accompany the holy fire as an expression of the ardor of passion he always subdued, which is why in many countries, January 17, in his honor, it is customary to light a huge fire propitiator aid against the hermit temptations. Most likely the buyer for this mystery was the confraternity of St. Anthony Abate.

The symbolic meaning of the mystery is the 'importance of defending the innocent.
San Leonardo, who was born in France in the late fifth century of an illustrious family, refused his comfortable life as a follower of San Remigio and devoted himself to preaching the gospel.
But when it was retired to Monaco in a forest, he built an oratory and gave birth to a monastery.

And 'This is one of the fundamental dogmas of the Catholic religion: the Assumption in body and soul into heaven of Mary. However, it remains connected to it a symbolic meaning that affirms the triumph of spirit over flesh, which validates the promise of God on the resurrection of the body, ensures the blissful realm of the spirits and is a deserving tribute to the glory of the Mother of God in the church

At the bottom of hell, the upper St. Michelle dressed as greek soldier holding a heavy chain as a sign of pride repressed urges him on with a drawn sword, symbol of justice, the rebels and push them towards the mouth of hell (Revelation 12: 7). Devils while trying to elicit laughter with gross gestures, calling loudly and friends by name, authorities, citizens noted that happen before their eyes, and if they do not make a bid are sent ... hell.
's funny and grotesque attitude of the devils in the two groups is not random, is a living remnant of medieval popular culture that could not separate the spiritual components from the comic, ironic and sometimes obscene, so common in the repertories of the court jesters .

History

THE ORIGIN OF THE MYSTERIES
.
The term mysteries defining representations of medieval sacred object in the vernacular, evidenced in France from the eleventh century, which were performed in religious ceremonies to completion of the liturgical offices.
This is akin to theatrical forms, which originated from the decay of classical greek and roman theater and the stagnation of the theater during the medieval period, which became the media of the time and gave a slow start, in Renaissance, a revival of theatrical forms themselves, which, in turn, formed the basis of modern theater.
On the one hand there 'was the instinctive needs of the people to give vent to their religion mixed human being,' the more the Church's desire to educate the masses, mostly illiterate, with spectacular forms such as to arouse interest. These forms were to support it, to 'open the function entrusted to the educational narrative sculpture and painting in the churches.
The phenomenon was common to many European cities in its basic content but had different names in different places: Mystere (symbolic play) in France, auto sacramental (holy representation) in Spain; Passion (Mystery of the Passion) in Germany; Myracle-plays (sacred representations) in England.
Over the centuries (XV-XVII), with the 'evolution of customs, with the spread of grandeur enhanced by the rich Renaissance courts, with the psychological and ideological revolution of the Renaissance who turned away the spirits by the contemplation of a supernatural realm and to turn worldly goods, you get to treat more stage effects that the essence of religion so as to cause the infiltration of pagan elements in the sacred dramas sometimes slipping into inappropriate and vulgar. Hence the ban on these figurative usages, reported in some councils held in France in the sixteenth century and enshrined in the diocesan synod of 1629 and the replacement, in some Italian cities, groups with groups living wood (eg, mysteries of the Good Friday in Trapani) in which the intuitive strength and ability artist had to reach the efficiency evocative and exciting once promoted by living people.
.
THE MYSTERIES in Campobasso
.
Nell 'I appreciate the city in 1688, Eng. Nauclerio speaks of the feast of Corpus Domini emphasizing the ceremony wearing the pallium of the chapel of the Church of San Leonardo, which was preserved by priests to a source dell'Acquasanta, pimps up the plan for road and four teachers who then delivered to the Lord of the city or Mastrogiurato or mayors.
Turning to civilians who handed him over to the artisans. At the end of the event the protectors and the Four Masters resumed stake in front of the church and reported to the Chapel.
In 1732, Banner is to talk it over in his report of the festival: "The festival is celebrated in the Church of San Leonardo located on the Palazzo Ducale, where a procession to the various mysteries are natural, that the two Confraternity of SS. And the Holy Trinity Mary of the Cross be with their comp and six mysteries (one year for each one) and that of St. Anthony Abbot goes every year, the Brotherhood with its mysteries all with his six wax candles, coll 'association of all the men who are stationed in the convent and six together circuit are all the Earth. "
.
THE MYSTERIES OF THE ZINN
.
In 1740, the Confraternity of Sant 'Antonio Abate, Santa Maria of the Cross and Holy Trinity are built Di Zinno to six cars each.
Di Zinno did not want to sacrifice the comprehensive and compelling suggestion that erupts from 'natural hair swinging in the wind, the living mobile light of the eyes, the color of the cheeks, the thrill of breathing.
Volle then keep life in its essence, but the function entrusted to the bodies of the statues, busts immobilizing, legs and arms in the attitude required from the stage, linking actors to support an almost miraculous invisible.
Each mystery is made of a wooden stretcher on which a structure is placed in iron and steel (to get from 'a strength and elasticity on the other) that develop in vertical branches and leads to each end of the harness, each of which is placed in a child.
Children are angels, devils, madonnas and saints and appear to float in the air because the harnesses are hidden from the costumes and the structure becomes an integral part of the decorative elements of mystery, for example, making the foot of a table (Mysteries of St. Crispin and St. Nicholas), the stalk of a cedar (Mystery of St. Nicholas), a snake (Mystery of the Immaculate Conception), a chain (Mystery of St. Michael), a pilgrim's staff (Mystery of San Rocco). On the basis of the Mystery
other characters are interpreted, according to the role, children or adults.
The Mysteries are carried on the shoulders in a procession through the streets of the city and the steady pace of the carriers, swinging the iron structure, creates the illusory sensation of seeing angels and devils to fly to several meters from the ground.
Di Zinno, around 1740, invented the Mysteries but you're not twenty-four feet would carry on testing and six others, representing the Body of Christ, SS. Trinity, St. Mary of the Cross, Our Lady of the Rosary, Santo Stefano and San Lorenzo, were destroyed during the earthquake of 26 July 1805 by the collapse of the buildings where they were stored.
Since then marched the remaining twelve Mysteries depicting Sant 'Isidoro, San Crispino, San Gennaro, Abraham, Mary Magdalene, Sant' Antonio Abate, the 'Immaculate Conception, San Leonardo, San Rocco, the Assumption, St. Michael and St. Nicholas until 1959, when the cousins Tucci realized a thirteenth Mystery, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on the basis of a drawing attributed to Di Zinno.
.
PAUL XAVIER of Zinn
.
Born in 1718 in Campobasso, 's childhood and adolescence there is no news. In 1737 (XVIII century) went to Naples at the shop of the little-known master Gennaro Franzese to learn the craft of sculptor, helped financially by his brothers, with the 'commitment to stay for five years.
returned in Campobasso, is changing the scenery of the city and is elected to local government. He began his activities a sculptor, although at the commissions are low.
Elected to the Government of the Confraternity of Santa Maria della Croce, in 1759 ends up in jail accused of "proper procedures" exonerated, is released and continues to manage, but not for long, the life of the Brotherhood.
is stated as a wood sculptor, and his reputation grows, the fees are numerous, and, together with bequests to his family and that, well off, the wife has earnings that allow a good standard of living.
's peak of his career and prestige is touched when he was given the reinvention of The Mysteries of Corpus Domains. He died in 1781 in Campobasso, leaving a substantial legacy asset that is Art.
The fundamental period for the artistic evolution of Di Zinno is from Naples, in whose environment he learned techniques and technologies and in-depth knowledge of technical and expressive qualities of the artists his age (he was principal, during the governorship of the Congregation Santa Maria della Croce in Campobasso).
The wooden sculptures of Di Zinno are numerous, present in most of the churches in Molise, Campania, Puglia, Abruzzo, the only sacred subject, about 30 of those cataloged are signed and dated (from 1745 1781), other 68 are accepted for the award.
specialization in carving (sculpture processional) is the basis of his work more relevant, "living machines" of the Mysteries of Corpus Christi : on sturdy planks develops a framework of iron and steel from which trunk branch crossed branches, shape and length relative to their function, which is to hold the set alive.
Each platform is carried on the shoulders in rhythmic march, guarded by a "mystery head" by a number of carriers. The machine, commissioned by three fraternities in the city (of San Antonio Abbot of St. Mary of the Cross and the Trinity), were maintained by the same fraternities with an annuity for the costs of conservation, clothing and transportation for the day of the feast (Corpus Christi).
Of the 24 machines created by Di Zinno, only 18 came out in public because you would carry no final test, 4 more were severely damaged in the earthquake of 1805. 'S conception of the Mysteries, to the first decade of the second half of the eighteenth century, stands in full baroque trend, and as a reference point Naples.

Not many extra Easter traditions that interest me and excite at the same level as those related to Holy Week, but I must say that the Feast of the Mysteries of Campobasso, for many years aroused in me a certain attraction without explaining that I knew why ... I liked it and all.
I have read and seen much of this event on the internet, I bought a book on the mysteries, but before June 14, 2009 there had never personally witnessed, the fact is that, on this date, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, with my Mauro Spagnolo dear friend, a great connoisseur and lover of folk traditions, I made a quick visit to Campobasso to finally vedere i Misteri con i miei occhi.
I decided that from now on, every year, I will be at Camp on the day of Corpus Christi.

The "Sagra dei Misteri Campobasso is one of the most important and evocative expressions of popular culture religious Molise.
